Activities and Attractions in close proximity:
Oribi Gorge: On windy days take a trip inland to Oribi Gorge (± 30mins from Uvongo). Drive through the forge, take in the sights from the top of the gorge. Visit the overhanging rock and end up with lunch at the Oribi Gorge Hotel or take a picnic. Oribi Extreme is responsible for the rafting, abseiling and hiking in the area. For the brave - take a go on the new Swing in the gorge - 170m high.
St Michael's: Close by St Michael's on sea offers the best surfing waves on the Natal Coast and a challenging 9- hole golf course.
Shelly Beach: Other than shopping, Shelley Beach is the launching site for deep sea fishing charters, Ocean Safaris, Dive charters and Shark Adventures. The Sonny Evans launching ramp is the gateway to Protea Banks - a magnificent submerged reef (about 7km off-shore) which is teeming with oceanic life, as well as gaining popularity as the world's number one shark viewing spot. The Shell Museum in Shelley beach has one of the largest display of shells in South Africa.
Crocodile Farm: The Crocodile Farm has feeding sessions on Sundays, that should not be missed. Also available on the farm is an art gallery, craft shop and Tea Garden/restaurant.
Casino: The Wild Coast Sun - 25 mins drive away offers shows, gambling, restaurants, ten pin bowling, games area suitable for infant to teenage and a beautiful, but challenging golf course.
Golf Courses: The coastline is well known for the golf courses. From Selbourne to the Wild Coast Sun you will find at least 10 magnificent, challenging and unique golf courses.
Uvongo: The
Douglas Mitchell Sports Ground offers tennis, squash, cricket, rugby and model-car racing - with regular meetings held on the dirt track and the asphalt race circuits. The Uvongo Bird Park next door offers an enchanting walk through the
aviary to view the birds and other interesting animals. Take tea in the garden while the children enjoy themselves in the play-park.
Old Macdonald's Family Farm: Old Macdonald's Family Farm is a great place for the family. Spend the day on the banks of the Izotsha River fishing, grilling on the braai, relaxing, while the kids enjoy pony rides, tractor rides and feeding the farm animals and birds. Open daily in season from 9:30 am to 4 pm. Out of season on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays and weekends.
Banana Express Steam Train: The Banana Express train departs from Port Shepstone to Paddock on a Wednesday and Saturday at 10:00 am. The train climbs and winds inland on a scenic journey through
spectacular indigenous forests, rolling green hills, sugar cane fields and banana plantations, twisting and sometimes almost doubling back on itself as it negotiates the hills and valleys. A barbeque lunch is provided at Paddock and then the train returns to Port Shepstone,
